Passive Safety

Passive Safety

The world can be an uncertain place with unexpected events occuring on the road. Keeping our loved ones safe at all times is paramount. This is why Subaru cars are designed to provide you peace of mind with active safety systems that comes into play while you are driving and passive safety systems with safeguards built to protect you in the event of an accident. At Subaru, we incorporate numerous technologies designed to protect both passengers as well as pedestrians. Roads and circumstances can be unpredictable, which is why we design the body structure of cars in a way that absorbs impact energy in an offset collision.

Breakaway Engine

All Subaru cars are powered with our horizontally-opposed Subaru Boxer Engine. With an inherently low centre of gravity, the engine allows the transmission and other components in the drivetrain to be positioned in a single symmetrical line that allows the engine to slide under the floor in the event of a frontal collision. This means that you are protected from the possibility of the engine intruding into the passenger compartment.

3-point Seatbelts

Most Subaru models come equipped with three-point seat belts for all five seating positions that are height-adjustable in front.

The front three-point seat belts feature electronically triggered pretensioners and force limiters, working together to gradually restrain the passengers and help absorb the impact energy of a frontal collision. In a moderate to severe frontal collision, the seat belt pretensioners - operating simultaneously with the front air bags - cinch the front seat belts to help restrain the front seat occupants. The torsion-bar force limiters extend the belts to reduce force on the passengers' torso, absorbing energy through internal deformation.

Driver & Passenger Airbags

Both the driver's seat and passenger's seats SRS airbags work in tandem with seatbelts to protect everyone in the car. These are folded in a compact size and stored within the steering wheel and dashboard, they then inflate instantaneously to form airbags during a collision, providing added protection to you and your loved ones.

Side & Curtain Airbags

Be it a side collision or a roll-over collision, we have airbags ready to protect all passengers in the car. In the event of a collision, the side and curtain airbags installed within the car will inflate to protect the passengers. Curtain airbags provide a much larger protective area around the head, and are effective for everyone regardless of body size and sitting positions. It is little wonder that Subaru drivers are able to navigate with greater peace of mind at all times.

Safety Pedal

Safety Pedal

In the event of a frontal collision, a car's pedals often move backward, causing injuries to the driver's leg. All Subaru cars employ auto-retracting pedals to minimise this type of injury.

Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames

Built to reduce impacts from any direction, the front side frame and sub-frames surround the engine. The ring-shape arches over the cabin area extending from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor with a single tough and energy absorbing frame that is capable of reducing shocks and protecting the entire cabin area.

The ring-shaped cross section frame design combines the A, B and C pillars (and D pillars on wagons) to create a series of rings around the passenger compartment. Combining the side roof rails and lower side sills with the A, B and C pillars forms another series of rings.

Reinforcements to roof, rear end, door frames, pillars and floor are linked in an all-round shield that absorbs enormous amounts of energy in impacts from any direction. So, everyone inside can feel more secure. Attention to detail is the key to reassurance, right down to a safety pedal that reduces the risk of driver's lower limb injuries in frontal collisions.

Pedestrian Protection

The space between the bonnet and the engine is there to protect pedestrians during accidents. Subaru is pro-active in protecting pedestrians.

Side Door Reinforcement Beams

Reinforcing beams have been added within the door frames, which help prevent distortion to the cabin during side collisions and ensure the safety of passengers sitting inside.

Protection against Roll-Overs

Subaru cars boast exceptional driving stability thanks to the low centre of gravity design and suspension system that offers excellent traction. Our cars are engineered to have a low risk of a roll-over. If circumstances arise such that your Subaru car is involved in a roll-over, the high rigidity of the Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames body help to prevent your cabin space from being affected. The shock absorbing materials used throughout the various safety features of the car help to reduce any impact delivered.
