Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Subaru is the Japanese translation for Pleiades, which refers to a star cluster in the Taurus constellation. Six of its stars are visible to the naked eye, which are used in the Subaru logo. Interestingly, FHI was also created through the merger of six companies.

FHI is the successor to Nakajima Aircraft, originally established as the Aircraft Research Laboratory in 1917 by Chikuhei Nakajima. Nakajima first produced airplanes for the Japanese navy, but soon left to establish Japan's leading aircraft manufacturing company. When World War II ended, the company sought new ways to make use of the technologies garnered in aircraft production, and formed Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), which created Japan's first prototype motor scooter.

In 1951, FHI merged its expertise with five companies involved in scooter manufacturing, concept and bodywork production, engine manufacturing, rolling stock manufacturing and trading to begin full-scale activities of FHI. This signalled the start of full-scale car manufacturing, starting with the birth of the Subaru 360, an endearing passenger car with a distinctive personality.

Subaru is currently the only car marque that features the symmetrical All-Wheel Drive across the entire Subaru line-up. Every Subaru is equipped with a lightweight, high power, horizontally-opposed "boxer" engine with a low center of gravity. This core technology works transparently on any road and under any condition, requiring no assistance from the driver. With long-travel, four-wheel independent suspension and the right traction, Subaru is the ultimate driver's car to deliver the right performance you'd expect from your car.

The Subaru AWD lies at the heart of the Subaru driving experience. On rough roads, it gives the confidence to get you wherever you need to go, by putting power safely and securely to the wheels that give you grip and control. On the road, the AWD improves handling and provides sure-footed traction under every kind of condition, from dry, sweeping corners to unexpected downpours. Best of all, these benefits also work for you even on dry tarmac, to give cornering precision and poise that have to be experienced to be believed.

This is a common modern-day misconception. AWD systems are highly intelligent and over the years, our engineers have improved the fuel economy of our cars significantly. Recently, a stock-standard Subaru Impreza 1.6TS also entered the Singapore and Malaysia Book of Records for driving over 838.5 km on a standard tank of fuel, effectively disproving the fact that AWD vehicles are not fuel-efficient.

Active safety and accident avoidance have long been a feature of Subaru symmetrical AWD systems. Four-sensor/four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) works on all four wheels to detect instant lock-up and provide the power to brake and steer away from danger at the same time. Electronic Brake-force Distribution System also ensure brake force is distributed evenly and avoid potential trouble. Ring-shaped reinforcement frames encircle driver and passengers in a steel cage to defend against impact from any direction. SRS dual front airbags are standard, while seat belts have electronic pretensioners and load limiters in front, with three-point belts to the rear. All these add up to Subaru's philosophy of Active Driving, Active Safety.

The most basic Subaru model is the Impreza, but it is against this background that Subaru developed the highly esteemed rally car that has competed and won the toughest rallies on earth. The Impreza is available in the 1.5/1.6 litre version, and for those who seek real performance in a car, the WRX is the turbocharged version that delivers power and performance. The STI is the ultimate in Impreza performance and is the closest you'll get to adrenaline pumping driving on the road.

For those who want the best of both worlds, the Subaru Forester lets you combine the best traits of on-road driving with off-road adventure in style. With a spacious interior and generous legroom, the Forester's ability to handle the demands of multiple lifestyles sets new standards of driving comfort and pleasure.

The Legacy models marry agility with ability. Voted Japan Car of the Year for 2003-2004, the Legacy is the ultimate Subaru for those who seek luxury and refinement with a hint of sportiness. The Legacy is available as a 2.0R sedan or turbocharged 2.5GT sedan. Those who seek a sophisticated station wagon and off-road SUV can rely on the Subaru Outback for total driver satisfaction.
